Clean Power Plant Goes Online To Ensure The Healthy Development
The world’s largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant went into operation on Thursday. Its operator, State Grid Corporation of China, is China’s largest state-owned utility company.
The 3.6 GW Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station consists of 12 reversible pump turbine units with a capacity of 300 MW. It is located in Hebei Province, about 180 kilometers away from the Chinese capital. It is the site of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The designed annual power generation capacity is 6.612 billion kilowatt-hours, and the annual pumped storage capacity is 8.716 billion hours. It has the largest underground pumped storage power station in China.
Pumped storage hydropower is the most common type of energy storage in use today.
These powers plants save surplus electricity by pumping water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir during the night. When the powers demand is low, and release water to generate electricity during the day when the demand is high.
Increasing the installed capacity of pumped storage hydropowers is essential to promote China’s green energy transition. The National Energy Administration stated that the country’s goal is to operate 62 GW of energy storage facilities by 2025 and 120 GW by 2030.
Xin Baoan, chairman of the State Grid, said that the operation of the pumped-storage powers station will be responsible for all the venues of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Which will help fulfill China’s green commitment to host the Olympics with clean energy.
Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station will operate as a peak-shaving powers station to ensure the safe and stable operation of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei power grid. While balancing the intermittent powers supply of large-scale wind power and solar parks in northern Hebei and Inner Mongolia.
When operating at full load, the power station can store up to 40 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy power generation. Which is not only conducive to ensuring the stable and stable operation of the North China Power Grid. But also conducive to promoting the clean transformation of the North China Power Grid. It said that the country’s energy structure will help the country achieve its carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.
State Grid said that this is also the first time a pumped storage power station has been connected to the flexible DC network.
Wei Hanyang, a power market analyst at the research company Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Said that as the world’s largest sustainable 10.8-hour energy storage unit. Fengning Pumped Storage Powers Station is strategically located to support key areas such as Beijing and Tianjin.
He said that the region is also rich in renewable energy, whose intermittent nature requires a powerful output stabilizer.
The company stated that the first phase of the project started construction in May 2013, and the second phase started in September 2015.
