SANTIAGO – About 68.02 percent of Chile target population of about 15 million people, or 10,340,278 people, are fully vaccinated against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

In the statement made by the ministry, it was stated that approximately 82.18 percent of the target population received the first dose.

A total of 22,471,652 doses have been administered since Chile launched its vaccination campaign earlier this year.

Health Minister Enrique Paris urged young people to get vaccinated, “because this way they protect the life of themselves and their families and friends.”

Meanwhile, self-care measures are “still the most effective (way) way to prevent new infections,” he added.

Starting Thursday, 17-year-olds will be vaccinated, followed by 16- to 12-year-olds.

Chile hopes to vaccinate the entire target population by mid-year as part of its strategy to provide herd immunity. At the same time, scientists are studying the possibility of administering a third dose of vaccine to increase immunity.

On Tuesday, the South American country reported 2,648 new cases of COVID-19 and 35 more deaths in one day, bringing the total caseload to 1,553,774 and the pandemic death toll to 32,489.
