The IoT operating system of the tech giant provides a competitive choice. Experts said that the successful launch of Huawei smart phone Hongmeng operating system has made a major breakthrough, but there is still a long way to go to successfully build a strong software ecosystem.

Their comments came after the Chinese technology giant launched Harmony-OS 2. The latest operating system for smartphones, tablets and smart watches on Wednesday night.

According to Wang Baohua, a computer expert in the Department of Information and Computing Science at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Shenzhen University. Google’s Android system and Apple’s iOS system the two most widely used smartphone systems in China.

Wang said that the Hongmeng operating system has proved Huawei’s technical strength and will help it retain customers to a certain extent. When it is unable to guarantee sufficient smartphone shipments to attract new consumers due to restrictions by some overseas governments time.

Huawei has announced the list of the first batch of existing smartphones and pointed out the timetable for introducing other models to the new operating system in the first half of next year.

This move marks a crucial step for Huawei.

After Washington restricted its access to Google software and services in 2019. Huawei has made a long preparation for the transition from Google’s Android operating system to the Hongmeng operating system.

Huawei said earlier that it expected that by the end of this year. The number of devices equipped with the Hongmeng operating system will reach 300 million. Which Huawei’s equipment will exceed 200 million.

Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Yu Chengdong said that Hongmeng OS is by no means a substitute for Android or iOS. Rather, it aims to power the Internet of Things. Yu said that the IoT-compatible Hongmeng operating system designed to quickly connect different devices from different brands and enable them to “cooperate” with each other.

Zhao Xiaogang, an associate professor at the School of Computer Science of Wuhan University, called Hongmeng a “super terminal” that can achieve a more streamlined and more efficient cross-device connection.

HarmonyOS has greatly improved the speed of interaction between devices and the efficiency of computing power. However, thereby providing customers with a more optimized cross-device user experience, Zhao said.

Hongmeng OS debuted in August 2019.

Before going online on Wednesday, it applied to smart TVs and third-party home appliances such as ovens and hoods.

Experts said that it takes time and effort for Huawei to build a vibrant ecosystem of software and hardware partners. However, they added that this is the key to the operating system’s survival in the competitive digital world.

Wang Chenglu, president of the software department of Huawei Consumer Business Group. Furthermore, the short-term market share goal of the Hongmeng ecosystem is 16%.

“Sixteen percent is the threshold for the prosperity and development of the operating system ecosystem. This is the threshold that Huawei must pass,” Wang said.

Beijing-based software developer Yin Dong has been using Hongmeng’s tools to develop mobile applications for five months. However, he said he is very optimistic about the future of the operating system. It is very convenient to develop cross-device experience applications based on the Hongmeng operating system, making it more advantageous than Android. Furthermore, which is specifically designed for smartphones,” Yin said.
